The goal is to enrich the lives of children at that school by encouraging and developing their academic skills through interaction with supportive adults. Caring people are needed to give of their time for one-on-one assistance with everything from study strategies, to basic skills such as letters and colors, to math, to just getting the children excited about reading. Downtown Florence Pocket Museum

The Downtown Florence Pocket Museum has re-opened at its new location, in the lobby of License Commissioner Mickey Haddock in the joint city-county Federal building. The first exhibit at the new location is vintage barber shop items from the collection of Roger Haddock. The new exhibit from May 1 and continuing through the end of June is an exhibition of old Parker fountain pens and vintage bottles of ink presented by John Harris. On exhibit will be Parker Duofolds from the 1920s, Vacumatics from the 1940's, among others.

The purpose of the Downtown Florence Pocket Museum is to exhibit ordinary items of historical interest from the private collections of local citizens or to showcase interesting ephemera relating to historical persons or events in Florence.

The Downtown Pocket Museum is so called because it is contained within a glass enclosed display case only about five feet long. Each year, through the WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA Program Madison American Legion Post 229 makes an effort to put a wreath on every veteran's headstone throughout all the local cemeterys here in Madison. Lichtenstein and Christo Highlight Wells Fargo Advisors Art Exhibit

Florence, Alabama, October 20, 2009 – Several works by renowned artists Roy Lichtenstein, Christo and Jeanne-Claude will be featured in Landscapes: Selections from the Wells Fargo Advisors Corporate Art Collection, presented at the Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts beginning on November 6^th and running through December 31st. The Florence branch office of Wells Fargo Advisors will sponsor the exhibit of photographs and works on paper from the St. Louis-based financial services company’s art collection.

Lichtenstein—one of Andy Warhol’s contemporaries—parodies traditional landscape imagery with his distinctive Pop style in his print titled Landscape. Also included in the exhibit is Running Fence, a collage and lithograph triptych that documents a five- -year land-art undertaking by husband and wife team Christo and Jeanne-Claude. The project involved creating an entirely new landscape by erecting an18-foot-high fabric fence that snaked to the Pacific Ocean over 24½ miles of rolling hills in California’s Sonoma and Marin counties.

Consisting of 13 pieces, the Wells Fargo Advisors exhibition features a broad range of locations while offering a variety of artistic techniques and interpretations.

“These are striking works of art, and we are very pleased to be able to bring this collection to the Florence community,” says Wells Fargo Advisors branch manager Tom Ross. “These pieces cover a number of diverse landscapes, and we hope visitors will enjoy this visual journey.”

Originally created as an A.G. Edwards program in 1991, the traveling art exhibition program enables branch offices to partner with local art institutions and share selections from the corporate collection with their communities. Since the program’s inception, the branch offices have sponsored exhibitions at more than 90 art institutions across the country. Wells Fargo Advisors maintains a collection of art that includes paintings and works on paper, including prints, photographs and vintage posters.

The Landscapes exhibit will be on display at the Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts, located at 217 East Tuscaloosa Street, from Nov. 6 through Dec. 31. Belk will hold its annual Fall Charity Sale on November 7 to benefit local charities, schools and nonprofit organizations throughout the company’s 16-state market area. Belk’s Spring Charity Sale, held earlier this year, raised more than $5 million for hundreds of participating nonprofit organizations.

In exchange for a $5 donation, customers will receive a ticket admitting them to the Charity Sale on November 7 from 6 to 10 a.m. and entitling them to merchandise discounts ranging from an extra 15 to 50 percent on purchases throughout the store, including special savings on rarely discounted brands. Customers will also receive $5 off their first purchase of $5 or more at the event, and Belk cardholders will receive double Rewards points for card purchases.

Participating local charities will sell the Charity Sale tickets prior to the event and all proceeds from each $5 ticket sold will be retained by the charity. The Artists. Gary Mauer returns to the HSO after his acclaimed appearance in “Fantasies and Fairytales” in May of 2008. Mr. Mauer recently returned to Broadway in The Phantom of the Opera, and is widely regarded as the greatest Phantom of all time. He portrayed “Enjolras” in Broadway and international touring productions of Les Misérables. Julia Murney most recently appeared on Broadway as “Elphaba” in Wicked after playing the role on the national tour, and her television credits include 30 Rock, Sex and the City, Ed, NYPD Blue, and Law and Order. Virginia Woodruff is currently performing as “Church Lady/Darlene” in the national touring production of Oprah Winfrey presents The Color Purple, and performed for the Michael Jackson thirtieth anniversary concert in 2001. Conductor Joseph Lee made his Huntsville Symphony Orchestra series concert debut in May of 2008, leading the sold-out performance of “Fantasies and Fairy Tales.” He has conducted the HSO's Family and Young Peoples’ Concerts, and Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker with Community Ballet Association. Led by chorus master Billy Orton, The Huntsville Community Chorus is Huntsville's oldest performing arts organization performing a wide spectrum of styles, from oratorio to jazz selections and popular works.

Langston Dedication Day

On November 7, 2009 at 11am at the Langston Methodist Church in Langston, AL. we will be having a dedication service for the monument in honor of those men from our community who served in World War II. Sixty four men from here served and we are proud to erect this twelve foot monument in their honor. Congressman Parker Griffith and Dr. David Campbell from North East Comm. College will be speaking and food will be served in the fellowship hall following. We are expecting a large crowd and would really appreciate you coming to cover this special day for us. Jonathan Cain drawing workshop

A one-day drawing class with Jonathan Cain will take place on Saturday November 7 at Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts in Florence. The class will be from 9:00 a.m. 4:00 p.m. with an hour off for lunch. Cost is $40 and is due by November 2. Class size will be very limited so come by the arts center to register and pick up a supply list.

This will be a hands-on introduction to the fundamentals supplies and techniques of drawing in charcoal. Students will produce several preliminary gestural sketches as well as more finished drawings from still lifes.

Jonathan Cain has a BFA in graphic design from the University of North Alabama. He later attended the University of Mississippi where he obtained an MFA in sculpture and pursued an MA in art history. He has taught as an adjunct professor for U.N.A. and Northwest-Shoals Community College.

Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts is located at 217 East Tuscaloosa Street and is open free of charge from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
