Madison, Alabama - Horizon Elementary School, located at 7855 Old Madison Pike in Madison, is looking for new tutors to assist its successful volunteer tutoring program for struggling students. The goal is to enrich the lives of children at that school by encouraging and developing their academic skills through interaction with supportive adults. Caring people are needed to give of their time for one-on-one assistance with everything from study strategies, to basic skills such as letters and colors, to math, to just getting the children excited about reading. No teaching skills are needed! Anyone can improve the life of a Horizon child with just one free hour per week during the school day. Members of the community are encouraged to participate. Downtown Florence Pocket Museum

The Downtown Florence Pocket Museum has re-opened at its new location, in the lobby of License Commissioner Mickey Haddock in the joint city-county Federal building. The first exhibit at the new location is vintage barber shop items from the collection of Roger Haddock. The new exhibit from May 1 and continuing through the end of June is an exhibition of old Parker fountain pens and vintage bottles of ink presented by John Harris. On exhibit will be Parker Duofolds from the 1920s, Vacumatics from the 1940's, among others.

The purpose of the Downtown Florence Pocket Museum is to exhibit ordinary items of historical interest from the private collections of local citizens or to showcase interesting ephemera relating to historical persons or events in Florence.

The Downtown Pocket Museum is so called because it is contained within a glass enclosed display case only about five feet long. 15th Annual Christmas Craft Show

The Marshall County Craft Club will have it's 15th annual Christmas Craft Show beginning November 6 and continuing daily thru December 23. The show will be inside the former Makasa Outlet in the Boaz Plaza Outlet Center. Show hours are Monday thru Saturday, 9 AM to 6 PM; Sundays, 12:30 to 5:00. Lichtenstein and Christo Highlight Wells Fargo Advisors Art Exhibit

Florence, Alabama, October 20, 2009 – Several works by renowned artists Roy Lichtenstein, Christo and Jeanne-Claude will be featured in Landscapes: Selections from the Wells Fargo Advisors Corporate Art Collection, presented at the Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts beginning on November 6^th and running through December 31st. The Florence branch office of Wells Fargo Advisors will sponsor the exhibit of photographs and works on paper from the St. Louis-based financial services company’s art collection.

Lichtenstein—one of Andy Warhol’s contemporaries—parodies traditional landscape imagery with his distinctive Pop style in his print titled Landscape. Also included in the exhibit is Running Fence, a collage and lithograph triptych that documents a five- -year land-art undertaking by husband and wife team Christo and Jeanne-Claude. The project involved creating an entirely new landscape by erecting an18-foot-high fabric fence that snaked to the Pacific Ocean over 24½ miles of rolling hills in California’s Sonoma and Marin counties.

Consisting of 13 pieces, the Wells Fargo Advisors exhibition features a broad range of locations while offering a variety of artistic techniques and interpretations.

“These are striking works of art, and we are very pleased to be able to bring this collection to the Florence community,” says Wells Fargo Advisors branch manager Tom Ross. “These pieces cover a number of diverse landscapes, and we hope visitors will enjoy this visual journey.”

Originally created as an A.G. Edwards program in 1991, the traveling art exhibition program enables branch offices to partner with local art institutions and share selections from the corporate collection with their communities. Since the program’s inception, the branch offices have sponsored exhibitions at more than 90 art institutions across the country. Wells Fargo Advisors maintains a collection of art that includes paintings and works on paper, including prints, photographs and vintage posters.

The Landscapes exhibit will be on display at the Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts, located at 217 East Tuscaloosa Street, from Nov. 6 through Dec. 31. Quilt Challenge '09 exhibit

Entries in the Shoals Piecemakers Quilt Guild’s Quilt Challenge ‘09 will be on exhibit at Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts in Florence from November 12 through December 17. This year’s exhibit marks the 21st year of the Challenge.

The Guild members have new rules for the Challenge each year and the creative way the rules are followed by each member makes this exhibit an exciting adventure. The theme this year is “Favorite Saying.” Each quilter must depict their favorite saying in fiber and follow other rules on size and presentation. The Guild members chose the Best of Show, Best Use of Theme, and other awards, but the public chooses the People’s Choice Award by voting for their favorite quilt.

The Shoals Piecemakers Quilt Guild meets at 7:00 p.m. on the second Monday of each month at Saint Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Florence. New members are welcome. The Guild is made up of quilt makers at all levels of expertise and people who are interested in promoting the collection and preservation of quilts.

Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts is located at 217 East Tuscaloosa Street, and is open, free of charge, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. SportsMED Fitness has teamed up with the US Marine Corps Toys for Tots Campaign for "12 Days of Fitness." We are a drop off location, and are giving away 12 day passes to our fitness center in exchange for a new unwrapped toy or a cash donation of $12 (all of which will go to Toys for Tots). The campaign is running now through December 16th, 2009.

"The Wizard of Oz" Snead State Community College Theatre

"The Wizard of Oz" has been selected as the fall musical production by Snead State Community College. Snead State instructor and Whole Backstage veteran Johnny Brewer will direct.

The cast of characters and support personnel have had a long involvement with Snead State. Along with Mr. Brewer, Snead alumni are working in various capacities. Jason Lancaster serves as Assistant Director, Jimmy Davis is the Technical Director, and Sonia Gunter volunteers as the Theatre Secretary, the same position she held while a student here at Snead State almost 10 years ago. Community volunteers include Timmy Moore from Oneonta as Stage Manager and Steve Holman from Boaz as Assistant Stage Manager. Cast members include Snead State dual enrollment students from Boaz and Albertville High Schools; Holly Scott as Dorothy; A.J. Pollard as the Scarecrow, Erik Cederholm as the Tinman; and John Everett Brewer as the Cowardly Lion. Alumna Sara Murdock will play the role of Aunt Em. Other supporting cast members are – Emily Anne Trebus of Albertville as Toto, Boaz Schools Music Instructor, Miriam Richey portrays the Wicked Witch of the West, Kayla Harper from Arab is Glinda the Good Witch of the North and also from Arab, Chris Harper plays the Wizard of Oz.

Snead State students as well as several of our area high schools have students involved in the production. Many Snead alumni have children participating as munchkins as well. Snead State Cosmetology and Jazz Band are involved with providing service for make-up and hair and orchestra members.

“Anita and I love the experience of theater on a community college campus.” says Dr. Robert Exley, President of Snead State Community College. “Snead State is once again alive with energy and activity through the arts – specifically theatre.”

Johnny Brewer, Director of the Wizard of Oz says, “There are so many wonderfully talented folks in our area. I am proud to be a part of this production”.

Based on the L. Frank Baum classic book and on the 1939 MGM film musical, “The Wizard of Oz” is a remarkable American fairy tale. Baum's lovable characters, the Scarecrow, Cowardly Lion and Tin Woodsman, join Dorothy on a journey to meet the great Oz. While on their trek, they battle the Wicked Witch of the West. Dorothy’s journey through a fantasy land of multi-colored splendor, filled with wonderful wizardry, gloriously-costumed Munchkins and a wickedly-willful witch, touches the hearts of both young and old alike.

Tickets are available for purchase one hour prior to each performance only. No advanced tickets will be sold. Seating is first come, first served. All tickets are $10. No student, senior or group tickets are available. Snead students are admitted free with valid student ID.

Performances are scheduled for November 19-22 in the Bevill Center Concert Hall. From 6 to 9 p.m., you can enjoy a Friday night on your own terms or finish shopping, while your children enjoy dinner, age-appropriate science activities, a viewing in our theater and time with Sci-Quest’s hands-on exhibits.
