Clint Herring exhibit release

Paintings by Clint Herring will be on exhibit at Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts in Florence from February 18 through March 25. The exhibit, Only Water Divides: Southern Harmony, will include works that focus on the architecture and people of the South and of the Bahamas.

Herring lives in Auburn, Alabama, and works primarily in the medium of transparent watercolor. He attended Auburn University and worked as art director for a design firm before establishing himself as a full-time professional artist. His work has been exhibited in numerous galleries and museums across the South and was featured in the July 2004 issue of The Artist’s Magazine and the April 2008 issue of American Artist.

“There are strong elements in my work,” said Herring, “most notably my blending of chiaroscuro and precise visual detail. I embrace the realist approach in terms of content. My recent works capture moments and scenes of everyday life. I am motivated to portray a subject’s essence and aura. Within that aura I find isolation, innocence, and a spiritual element - a sense of the old and emergence of the new. My painting melds together a sense of spirituality and light. Hence, the infusion and recording of light and dark.”

Edward Hopper and Andrew Wyeth are artists who have strongly influenced Herring. “I admire the strong, yet simple compositions of Hopper’s work,” said Herring. “In terms of the handling and mastery of the medium, I have high regard for Wyeth.”

Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts is located at 217 East Tuscaloosa Street and is open, free of charge, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Museum programs are made possible, in part, by a grant from the Alabama State Council on the Arts. Sponsored by the Florence Department of Arts and Museums. Call (256) 760-6379 for more information.
