Vols' Clawson didn't expect 'one-and-done' shot
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Tennessee offensive coordinator Dave Clawson and his staff of first-year assistants made notes all season about what they would like to change about the Vols' problematic offense in the offseason.
With the exit of coach Phillip Fulmer, they won't get that chance.
Clawson says you never take a job with the expectation that it won't last more than a season, but he understands it is part of the nature of being a football coach.
Fulmer is being forced out as coach just a season after he hired Clawson to help shake things up on the Vols' offense after the departure of David Cutcliffe.
Clawson said he's not hardened by the fact that he won't get a chance to turn around the squad, which is averaging only 16.4 points per game this season.
The Vols (4-7, 2-5 Southeastern Conference) average 264.91 yards per game on offense, which is good enough to rank them 116th out of 119 major college teams. They face Kentucky (6-5, 2-5) on Saturday.
