Kentucky Rolls Over Louisville in 20-2 Win
Louisville, KY (Sports Network) - The Kentucky defense held Louisville's offense off the scoreboard, and defensive tackle Myron Pryor's 72-yard fumble return for a score punctuated the Wildcats' 27-2 win over the Cardinals in the season opener for both schools.
Mike Hartline completed 16-of-31 passes for 147 yards with no scores or interceptions for Kentucky (1-0), which won its second straight Governor's Cup despite struggling on the offensive side as well.
Tony Dixon led Wildcats rushers with 27 yards on 12 carries, but did have a rushing touchdown, and Randall Cobb was the leading receiver for Kentucky with three catches for 31 yards.
Hunter Cantwell completed 20-of-43 passes for 152 yards with no touchdowns and three interceptions for Louisville (0-1), which is coming off a disappointing 6-6 campaign in 2007, one which ended without an appearance in a bowl game for the first time since 1997.
Kentucky led 10-0 after Lones Seibler's 21-yard field goal with 9:53 left in the second quarter was followed up by Ashton Cobb's 28-yard fumble return for a score with 5:58 to play in the first half.
Neither team could get anything going on offense, and Kentucky took its 10-0 lead into the fourth quarter. An intentional grounding call in the end zone on Hartline gave the Cardinals two points and the ball with 14:17 remaining, but they couldn't capitalize. Seibler added another field goal to push Kentucky ahead 13-2 with 6:37 left in the fourth.
Cantwell was picked off by Kentucky cornerback Trevard Lindley at the Louisville 26-yard line later in the quarter, and Lindley ran it back 24 yards to the Cardinals' two. After a five-yard penalty, Dixon ran in seven yards for the score, and a commanding 20-2 Kentucky lead with 6:21 to go.
Pryor then stripped Cantwell after a decent Louisville drive moved in to Kentucky territory, and the big defensive lineman rumbled 72 yards for the score with 2:46 left to cap the scoring.
